I discovered encaustic in 2010, and I've been captivated by it ever since. There's something magical about working with hot wax: the translucency of the layers, and the way the medium invites you to play and let go of perfection. In this workshop, I'll walk you through the fundamentals in my light-filled Collingwood studio, at a relaxed pace and in a supportive space. Whether you've never picked up a brush or you're an artist curious about a new medium, you'll leave with a solid foundation and pieces of your own.
Intro to Encaustic: Painting with Hot Wax

I love introducing it to others and invite you to join me as I walk you through the basics of encaustic in my light-filled studio, at a relaxed pace and in a supportive space. Whether you've never picked up a paintbrush or you're an artist curious about a new medium, you'll leave with a solid foundation and pieces of your own.
4-HOUR WORKSHOP: 12:30pm - 4:30pm
LOCATION: Collingwood, ON
In this introductory hands-on workshop, you will learn…
a brief history of encaustic and how it’s made
how to safely and confidently use an Iwatani butane torch
how to prime a raw panel including fusing with the torch
different techniques of layering encaustic paint
how to create lines and pattern in the wax using inscribing tools
how to transfer a toner-based image
plus enjoy plenty of time to experiment and play!
PRICE INCLUDES: all supplies, materials and tools plus 2 wood panels to create on. You will be provided with a studio apron for use during class.
Please wear comfortable clothing, indoor shoes and tie back long hair. In the winter, make sure you bring an extra layer (sweater/sweatshirt) as it can get chilly in the studio. Bring your own snacks and a refillable water bottle or other non-alcoholic beverages.
